HSBC has its headquarters in London and based in Hong Kong is the world's third second biggest banking and financial services group. The origins of the bank lie in Hong Kong and Shanghai, where branches were first opened in 1865. It entered the UK through buying Midland Bank in 1992, and it came through the banking crisis unscathed survived the banking crisis without government intervention. It has over 1500 branches, and one in seven current accounts, and it owns two popular brands, first direct and M & S Money.

HSBC pushed hard into the mortgage market in 2008, taking advantage of other banks' difficulties to take a 25% share of new lending, and it has also expanded on the ground in Scotland. HSBC has the best record among the UK's leading banks for complaints handling.
