Online bank is offering a new rate on its internet savings account, it has been revealed.

For a minimum deposit of just £1, people can earn an interest rate of 6.55 per cent on their savings .

The savings account includes a bonus of 1.8 per cent gross for the first 12 months of its life.

Anyone can gain access to the savings account as long as it is opened with "new money from a non-Egg bank account ".

Dean Proctor, head of savings and investments at Egg, said: "Opening an Egg savings account is simple and provides the added flexibility to pay in or withdraw whenever you like, without penalty."

After the first 12 months, the savings account will revert to the standard variable rate which currently stands at 4.75 per cent.

Yesterday, Kevin Mountford, head of banking at Moneysupermarket.com warned that savings rates could be set to fall and suggested people find a good fixed-rate deal now.
