Building societies still offer the most consistent savings accounts when it comes to financial returns, new research shows.
A study by Moneyfacts.co.uk reveals that 36 of the 48 most reliable savings accounts are offered by mutual institutions.
The most consistent products on offer include the no notice savings account from Chesham building society, which was the steadiest perform over 18 months, while Teachers claimed the same title for money kept three years.
Michelle Slade, analyst at Moneyfacts.co.uk, said: "These are unsettling times and as a result of the lack of liquidity in the market, generally savings interest rates are going up and down, depending on each deposit taker's cash requirements."
Last week, Fairinvestment.co.uk urged people to shop around for the best savings account and not to restrict their money to well know high street names.
According to the firm, more obscure institutions can often offer better savings rates than high-profile banks .
