National Savings and Investments launches new website

Tue, 13 May 2008

National Savings and Investments has launched a new website aimed at giving people impartial information on financial matters, it has been announced.

According to the firm the service will allow people who do not understand financial matters to find the information they want quickly and easily.

The decision to set up the website follows research by the company which found that only eight per cent of people in the UK understand most financial terminology.

John Prout, director at National Savings and Investments, said: "We have recognised that there is a real and growing need for this sort of website. This new research shows that there is a lack of understanding of general financial planning across Britain."

The fact that so many people lack information could hinder the ability of people to make long-term plans as regarding their savings, he added.

Research by the company also found that 40 per cent of people do not know how inflation affects their savings, meaning that peoples' money could be going to waste without their knowing.

Yesterday, Michelle Slade, analyst at Moneyfacts, warned people planning to open a instant access savings account to check that they will not be penalised when they withdraw their money.
