GBP1.35bn places in savings accounts in February

Thu, 03 Apr 2008

Britons plough £1.35 billion in to building society savings accounts in February, figures show.

The data, released by the Building Societies Association (BSA) is the highest inflow of money in to the savings accounts in February since 1997.

Brian Morris, head of savings policy at the BSA, explained that the figure can be explained by the fact that building societies are currently offering very attractive savings accounts.

He said: "Building societies have enjoyed another strong month as high interest rates and attractive products have encouraged people to save with societies.

"The continuing economic uncertainty and volatility in stock markets have provided further incentives to put money in cash savings ."

Last February, £782 million was deposited in building society savings accounts.

A recent survey by Legal and General found that 70 per cent of northerners think putting money in to a savings account is a priority.

This compares to just 57 per cent of Londoners, the survey found.
