Large amounts of money are sitting in dormant bank accounts that have been "forgotten about", one expert has claimed.
Jason Clarke, spokesperson for Halifax, said that there are a number of accounts that people have opened in order to set savings aside that have not been used.
Halifax launched a campaign earlier this year to highlight the issue and help people reclaim the money left in savings accounts .
"Loss happens for a lot of different reasons. The majority of these accounts will have very little money in them - the overwhelming majority will have small amounts, £100 or less," Mr Clarke explained.
Often people saving for a specific reason such as a holiday using a pass book "genuinely forget" about their accounts, he added.
According to research by the Unclaimed Assets Register - part of credit agency Experian - approximately £15.3 billion currently lies in unclaimed bank accounts and other financial vehicles.
