Consumers show increased desire to start saving money, survey hints

Mon, 12 Feb 2007

Some two-thirds of people may be looking to start saving money this month, a new financing study has suggested.

According to research from insurance and investments specialists Legal & General, 65 per cent of UK adults were in the mood to save money at the end of January 2006.

To put this into context, the financial services provider points out that the comparable figure for December 2006 was 51 per cent.

One possible reason for this is that banking customers have spent heavily over the festive period and have now started making repayments on their credit cards and personal loans.

Claire Stracey, director of customer marketing at Legal & General, suggested that a fall in the amount of disposable money among many homeowners may be driving demand for savings options.

"This is the highest figure we've recorded in three years of tracking," she said.

"A fall in household disposable income is the most likely factor in pushing down the mood to spend in our survey."

People looking to start saving money may wish to consider a range of savings options, such as investing in a savings bond or opening an individual savings account.
