Halifax has announced it is to launch the Carbon Trust's pilot carbon reduction label for one of its most popular savings accounts .

The Web Saver account is believed to be the first financial product in Europe to get a carbon label.

According to Halifax, the Web Saver online savings account is responsible for 204 grams of greenhouse gas emissions a year.

The savings provider has committed to reduce this within two years and said that the label will be withdrawn if the target is not met.

Mike Regnier, head of savings at Halifax, said the institution is proud to be working with the Carbon Trust towards achieving the target.

He added that it is believed Halifax is the first bank in Europe to add a carbon label to one of its products.

Carbon Trust general manager of footprinting Euan Murray said the organisation was "pleased" to award a carbon reduction label to the Halifax Web Saver account.

"This demonstrates Halifax's willingness to tackle the climate change impacts of its services and help its customers better understand the impact of banking products on climate change," he added.

Halifax offers four web-based savings account options, according to its website.
