It is important that people begin saving towards next Christmas as "early as possible", one expert has suggested.
Susan Hannums, savings manager for AWD Chase de Vere, urged people to set aside money in preparation for next Christmas to avoid having to rely on credit .
People ought to get themselves back into the "savings habit", she suggested, claiming that the country has got itself into "a bit of a pickle financially".
The expert noted that individual savings accounts can be useful for taxpayers, although there are a number of different types of Christmas savings accounts available.
"There are plenty of options and there is definitely one that will suit each person's needs," she remarked.
According to Halifax, UK adults are expected to spend an estimated £11.92 billion on Christmas presents .
The firm stated that the average adult will spend close to £400 each on gifts during the festive period.
