Women expect better savings for men, study shows

Mon, 04 Sep 2006

Women expect men to have £24,000 in savings accounts, according to new research.

However, on average, men have less saved than this, at £20,000, the study from National Savings & Investments shows.

Furthermore, women expect men to contribute around £100 more to savings accounts than they currently are, the research indicates.

Although the survey shows that savings are not at expected levels, it also reveals that levels of saving are continuing to rise in the UK.

Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist at National Savings & Investments, said: "The good news is that savings levels continue to rise although the percentage of regular savers remains relatively static.

"We would like to see more people putting money away on a regular basis as part of a more disciplined approach to saving.

"Our results show that people who take this approach end up with a savings pot almost twice the size of those who only save sporadically."

Many providers of savings accounts have raised their interest rates recently, following the Bank of England's last base rate rise.
