Christmas hits UK savings, study shows

Mon, 30 Oct 2006

Britons are placing less money into savings accounts as Christmas draws near, new statistics have revealed.

Over the last three months, savings levels have dropped by one-fifth, according to Birmingham Midshires' Saving Britain campaign.

The figures showed that the average UK adults placed £413 into savings accounts since July this year, which is the lowest amount seen in 2006.

Disparity between men and women was also discovered by the study, as 41 per cent of women had no savings, while those that did saved less than half as much as their male counterparts.

On average, women saved £232 over the last three months - comparing with the £612 which men placed into savings accounts.

Jason Robinson, director of savings operations for Birmingham Midshires, commented: "Looking at current levels of savings, it would appear that many Brits may have started spending for Christmas early and so savings have fallen by the wayside slightly.

Birmingham Midshires offers a range of savings products to its customers, including internet, telephone postal and direct savings accounts.
