Figures released by Britannia Building Society show that football fans opening savings accounts to support their teams.
Over the last 18-months, Britannia has reported a 14 per cent increase in the number of customers opening "Save and Support" savings accounts, which offer annual affinity payment of one per cent of the savings accounts' daily balance to the supported club.
"It is hard to encourage people, especially children, to get in to a regular savings habit," said Tim Franklin, managing director of member business for Britannia.
"The Save and Support [savings] accounts make saving more interesting as savers feel that they are benefiting their favourite team as well as making an investment in their own financial future," Mr Franklin added.
Britannia's savings accounts allow customers to support one of 12 English football clubs including Manchester United , Chelsea , Liverpool and Ipswich Town .
In August and September, supporters of Liverpool and Manchester United can receive an additional one per cent interest bonus on their savings account balance in recognition of the two team's recent successes.
Last season, Liverpool won the FA Cup and Manchester United recently qualified for the Champion's League.
Founded in 1856, Britannia Building Society was originally known as the Leek &Moorlands Building Society.
