Savings tips for financial fitness

Mon, 20 Feb 2006

Nearly half of Britons make resolutions throughout the year, with Mondays proving popular for planning to turn over a new leaf, research shows.

However, 73 per cent of those who resolve to start saving money or embarking on a health and fitness regime fail to keep it up for a month, government-backed savings provider National Savings & Investments (NS&I) found.

Spending less and saving more money are among the top five resolutions made by people across the UK, but lack of willpower and too much temptation means they are struggling to stick to their good intentions, the savings provider's research shows.

For this reason, NS&I published tips to help people attain their desired level of financial fitness.

By setting realistic targets, people are more likely to stick to their goals, the savings provider says.

Those hoping to start saving money should limit credit card spending and set up a standing order to put money aside on a regular basis, NS&I adds.

Cutting back on one luxury a month could also result in savings, the savings provider suggests, while support from friends and family and professional assistance could also go a long way to help people reach their savings goals.

"It is encouraging that many people realise the importance of being financially fit and are setting financial targets for themselves," comments John Prout, sales director at NS&I.

"Making a simple positive decision – like setting up a regular savings arrangement – is one way of getting started."

He adds that once made, these decisions "really do fall into the category of 'no regrets'."
