Large savings accounts needed to support England

Tue, 25 Apr 2006

Ardent football fans will need full savings accounts or a good credit card to support England during this summer's World Cup.

According to the online bank cahoot, it could potentially cost a football fan £4,808 to travel to Germany and watch every England match, assuming England is capable of reaching the final.

This could mean that the 5,000 England fans who are expected to see every match could between them part with £24 million during the summer.

To pay for £734 worth of match tickets, along with £244 on trains and over £2,000 on accommodation, fans will need to ensure their banking is in order.

The online bank estimates that to afford the trip, fans would have needed to have put aside £95 into a savings account every month since the last World Cup four years ago.

Even if fans stay firmly in the UK, the online bank calculates that the average person will spend over £200 watching the games in the pub, buying food, drink and the obligatory shirt and scarf.

Cahoot suggests that if fans' savings accounts aren't looking as healthy as they could, a low cost personal loan could also help them cheer on their team and spread the costs.
